Reborn objects

Among the various jobs that I happened to do, this dates back to the second year of Scenography at NABA in Milan. It was a matter - for Jewelry Design class - of giving new life to old aluminum object, to be recovered in some flea market or by robbing grandmother's pantry, exactly as I did (thank you, grandmother Tullia!). I love aluminum, I find it beautiful even if it is considered a poor metal, as it is very light and too malleable. However, this allowed me, without any previous experience with metals, to create a floral necklace with a coordinated ring, transforming baking molds into cute daisies.

Objects destined to metamorphosys

"Which pieces did you choose to make your jewel?"

As always, it is the careful observation of the object that helps me to glimpse what it can become next. There were several aluminum things in my grandmother's pantry, some I still keep, waiting to turn them into something else. That time I chose several oval oven molds, those for making miniature cakes, to be clear. At the time I didn't know what they would become but I was hoping to be able to turn them into flowers. Then I opted for a donut mold: the profile that ran all around it would be the base ring for the necklace.

The transformation

First of all I made some daisies from each mold, making cuts between the grooves to obtain the petals (rounding the upper corners) and opening them outwards in an irregular way. Subsequently, with the jolt technique, I obtained the inner part of the flower on the bottom. Here then I worked to make the surface uneven, a bit stippled.

By cutting out small parts from the large mold, I obtained leaves and an open (adjustable) band for the coordinating ring. I enjoyed working in the laboratory very much, if I had the chance I would like to repeat the experience. To be honest, I always enjoy any manual activity. For many years I have liked to say that if I were to ever make a supersonic win at the Superenalotto (very unlikely, I would say, since I don't ever play!) I would spend my life taking courses of all kinds. Jewel design has been put on the list immediately!

"What happened to your creation?"

Some time after the exam, I was asked - and I don't even remember who did it - to lend the parure for a small exhibition. "No problem" I replied, I still have that bad habit of always trying to please everyone. Sometimes it's fine, sometimes a little less. In this case, I lost my work. At the end of the exhibition, the necklace and ring were no longer found, someone had taken them away. Pity!! Of course one thing must be said: the necklace was really uncomfortable! Whoever took it, I don't think they could make much use of it. In any case, many years have passed, who knows if it is still "alive" or has undergone a new metamorphosis ...
